<br />
Just a short update to let folks know that I am not dead, am not sick that I am aware of, and no, the project is not being abandoned although it may look like it :)<br />
<br />
The reality is other things have taken priority over the build and since this is a looooonnnng term project for me, I have to be OK with letting it sit for long periods while I take care of other stuff.<br />
<br />
Right now my priority has to be getting re-focused on my fitness and weight management. I am slowly creeping back up on the scale and that is not good! I cannot allow my weight to get too far ahead of me again!<br />
<br />
That being said, I must spend more time exercising and focusing on my health. This will slow the progress of the build because exercising takes a ton of time to do effectively!<br />

I was on Vacation!Last week, my wife and I flew to Miami and then a Lyft over to Port Everglades and boarded the Carnival Magic for a 6 day cruise to Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk, and Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic.<br />
<br />
It was a great week of being off the grid and relaxing!<br />
<br />
I will never get this airplane built at this rate :)<br />
<br />
Oh well! No need for me to be in a hurry! That fuse kit cost a bundle!<br />

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FxX-3cx9TGw/XWUfvLZ6OrI/AAAAAAAAahM/eHyDtDjIAF8XiwH89DTrQRc10I2Eq-4-QCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4988.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FxX-3cx9TGw/XWUfvLZ6OrI/AAAAAAAAahM/eHyDtDjIAF8XiwH89DTrQRc10I2Eq-4-QCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4988.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Finished riveting the other spar extension.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oMcM0O-QmvU/XWUfvI61MTI/AAAAAAAAahM/qaSKpI9_HAkOtXzF0UOHx01KGBzBY4NegCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4989.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oMcM0O-QmvU/XWUfvI61MTI/AAAAAAAAahM/qaSKpI9_HAkOtXzF0UOHx01KGBzBY4NegCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4989.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Then added the bolts and bellcrank brackets. Still need to torque these.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D2wETixdj2E/XWUfvJ_hwyI/AAAAAAAAahM/TpkqLYtf5TU6Wnl5DmlRkDUZ7bJFmqZSwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4990.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D2wETixdj2E/XWUfvJ_hwyI/AAAAAAAAahM/TpkqLYtf5TU6Wnl5DmlRkDUZ7bJFmqZSwCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4990.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
And finally there are two bolts that go thru the spar web doubler. Don't believe this tie down bracket is going anywhere with 6 bolts and 10 rivets in each one.Brian Chesteenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14394206506196128604noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11941516325512241.post-30805693844865500312019-08-24T20:00:00.000-04:002019-08-26T10:38:51.999-04:00Wing tie down bracket nutplates, Priming, and Riveting<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aFF2Zy1nArc/XWPuCHmUNUI/AAAAAAAAagU/TFEd0j2Swo0q2qs31i_9Z7PG7MzcaPu_wCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4978.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aFF2Zy1nArc/XWPuCHmUNUI/AAAAAAAAagU/TFEd0j2Swo0q2qs31i_9Z7PG7MzcaPu_wCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4978.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
So today I got started by drilling the nutplate mounting holes in the tie down brackets. I used my awesome nutplate jig to get this done!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WCdzYfy5wX0/XWPuCEWLzEI/AAAAAAAAagU/Aye7o01DMWU1e_-d4PqNAt7SbXruyKkfwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4979.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WCdzYfy5wX0/XWPuCEWLzEI/AAAAAAAAagU/Aye7o01DMWU1e_-d4PqNAt7SbXruyKkfwCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4979.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Then I countersunk the back of the brackets for the nutplate mount rivets.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f5YfSrTo5_4/XWPuCGrElPI/AAAAAAAAagU/pRWmUTUjl7kDihJfnrewbl2kalrre0zmgCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4980.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f5YfSrTo5_4/XWPuCGrElPI/AAAAAAAAagU/pRWmUTUjl7kDihJfnrewbl2kalrre0zmgCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4980.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Finally I needed to do a small batch of priming so I can finish assembly of the spar parts and move on to ribs!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0ruMaOGe2DQ/XWPuCNwTzXI/AAAAAAAAagU/03ir56fwJEg1kKsS5gQpYAo6ol8B1kS4QCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4981.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0ruMaOGe2DQ/XWPuCNwTzXI/AAAAAAAAagU/03ir56fwJEg1kKsS5gQpYAo6ol8B1kS4QCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4981.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
All primed.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_vvN1g1Sfqo/XWPuCK9CHXI/AAAAAAAAagU/2-Gg3x91gso3c2JF3jTQ4Q478UE2FMvoQCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4982.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_vvN1g1Sfqo/XWPuCK9CHXI/AAAAAAAAagU/2-Gg3x91gso3c2JF3jTQ4Q478UE2FMvoQCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4982.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Next I riveted the nutplates to the tie down brackets. I used the squeezer for this task.<br />

Started by marking the tie down bracket extrusions for cut to length.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qM0IBel8lgQ/XWPsxOIn23I/AAAAAAAAagI/7wEkadUW8qANQuzbwO05NFsA7ZRaOq6qACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_0024.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qM0IBel8lgQ/XWPsxOIn23I/AAAAAAAAagI/7wEkadUW8qANQuzbwO05NFsA7ZRaOq6qACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_0024.HEIC" width="240" /></a></div>
Then I cut them on the band saw.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-owP-8SQu2L0/XWPsxNIDXsI/AAAAAAAAagI/gMP-85xRyZUB5Ae0D7IVuTX1WWIlqyzxgCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_0025.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-owP-8SQu2L0/XWPsxNIDXsI/AAAAAAAAagI/gMP-85xRyZUB5Ae0D7IVuTX1WWIlqyzxgCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_0025.HEIC" width="320" /></a></div>
Then I marked and drilled the pilot hole. I went ahead and mirrored the left one and started a right one.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AJSHlmfzcpY/XWPsxM2LlKI/AAAAAAAAagI/RnEoWifTzM8y_EXehdnlhVrREEq_NGT4wCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_0026.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AJSHlmfzcpY/XWPsxM2LlKI/AAAAAAAAagI/RnEoWifTzM8y_EXehdnlhVrREEq_NGT4wCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_0026.HEIC" width="240" /></a></div>
Then I drilled and tapped the bottom end.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f93CxpiSwKE/XWPsxJJHXdI/AAAAAAAAagI/lOwxqvkfkuktVHLGBOzuvKfRgXokxdLAgCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_0028.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f93CxpiSwKE/XWPsxJJHXdI/AAAAAAAAagI/lOwxqvkfkuktVHLGBOzuvKfRgXokxdLAgCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_0028.HEIC" width="240" /></a></div>
All tapped.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Then I attached them to the spars and match drilled them to the spar.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RpN4Ap7Sr_U/XWPsxEK1sqI/AAAAAAAAagI/VHnJaWYFR58P0ZOOGFQsfvBkCOgZoTEAgCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_0030.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RpN4Ap7Sr_U/XWPsxEK1sqI/AAAAAAAAagI/VHnJaWYFR58P0ZOOGFQsfvBkCOgZoTEAgCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_0030.HEIC" width="240" /></a></div>

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l42KmONwBis/XVwI42_AZ6I/AAAAAAAAacE/KBZw7tRkkSkSZrJr4x5jMa6FF19GmtQgwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4934.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l42KmONwBis/XVwI42_AZ6I/AAAAAAAAacE/KBZw7tRkkSkSZrJr4x5jMa6FF19GmtQgwCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4934.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Got started by countersinking the tank and inspection cover screw locations on the spar. The countersinks are deep enough that they knife edge and enlarge the holes. This is why you rivet on the nutplates first before countersinking these holes. The idea is that the pilot on the countersink cutter is captured by the nutplate keeping the hole concentric and it prevents cutter chatter. For these inspection plate screw holes, use a cutter with a #40 pilot.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MbZ14_AuqQk/XVwI402J1GI/AAAAAAAAacE/0a6vsTiIr5YvIz9DGmwedNU2QpJ_7M3OACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4933.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MbZ14_AuqQk/XVwI402J1GI/AAAAAAAAacE/0a6vsTiIr5YvIz9DGmwedNU2QpJ_7M3OACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4933.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Van's specifies the max diameter of these countersinks. In the past the trend was to make these too deep and as a result, to large in diameter.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Fm187R8ujAU/XVwI4-ta_WI/AAAAAAAAacE/5AQBn4HphMIkMZgl5ou4esefm1YmHykkQCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4935.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Fm187R8ujAU/XVwI4-ta_WI/AAAAAAAAacE/5AQBn4HphMIkMZgl5ou4esefm1YmHykkQCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4935.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
A test coupon is used just to double check the depth of the countersinks. Don't go too deep! The test coupon will sit just slightly proud when the depth is just right. NOT FLUSH! If you go to flush, the coupon will be able to move around in the countersink and this is a No No....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XDkweW1Dl0c/XVwI48rIVNI/AAAAAAAAacE/uHkzmEWNH9AzkrIL9-aDVTiy38lWDToEwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4936.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XDkweW1Dl0c/XVwI48rIVNI/AAAAAAAAacE/uHkzmEWNH9AzkrIL9-aDVTiy38lWDToEwCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4936.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
The tank attach screw holes are larger screws and have their own max diameter.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ixy6pXjd9lE/XVwI41b4NlI/AAAAAAAAacE/bn8SjKp7i4Ud7VkP7qXtpZC2MFY32S4YACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4937.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ixy6pXjd9lE/XVwI41b4NlI/AAAAAAAAacE/bn8SjKp7i4Ud7VkP7qXtpZC2MFY32S4YACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4937.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Got to use a cutter with a #30 pilot for these.<br />

<br />
Here is the ~ number of countersinks that were done for the wing spar flanges. Yes that is a bunch! I love my single flute countersink cutters! They make this much easier than the three flute ones! Just watch out for that large spiral chip that they make as it is sharp. Also be aware that they cut really fast so be sure you know they are adjusted properly before cutting into your high dollar spars!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-isXZKlzX5gw/XVwI44hPLfI/AAAAAAAAacE/aQdvgPec76QYl5yppVDgDgq4i6juyzkjQCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4947.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-isXZKlzX5gw/XVwI44hPLfI/AAAAAAAAacE/aQdvgPec76QYl5yppVDgDgq4i6juyzkjQCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4947.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Next step was to increase this hole size to 3/8" on the left spar only and install a snap bushing.<br />
<br />

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IYk4zhJhQIk/XVwI45fHWqI/AAAAAAAAacE/7_fkrejQRQ0KNzRoCcYVFWxmE0QC4UO2QCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4951.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IYk4zhJhQIk/XVwI45fHWqI/AAAAAAAAacE/7_fkrejQRQ0KNzRoCcYVFWxmE0QC4UO2QCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4951.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Next I triple checked that I was countersinking these spar flange rivet holes that are in between the wing attach bolt nuplates.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t8kuskZPugA/XVwI496sNfI/AAAAAAAAacE/LH13KONTgEA0JJ6rcv0fJpDgIr58hH7gQCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4952.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t8kuskZPugA/XVwI496sNfI/AAAAAAAAacE/LH13KONTgEA0JJ6rcv0fJpDgIr58hH7gQCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4952.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Here they are all countersunk.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T59b7o7mAB8/XVwI47YK6aI/AAAAAAAAacE/JNCvGCiTxIgLQx7FSp1ZsjouApAL0wRLACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4953.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T59b7o7mAB8/XVwI47YK6aI/AAAAAAAAacE/JNCvGCiTxIgLQx7FSp1ZsjouApAL0wRLACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4953.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Next I triple checked that I was countersinking the correct side for the wing attach bolt nutplates. These get flush mounting rivets.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IeUK_MO232k/XVwI4_aHc2I/AAAAAAAAacE/8CqvvG6z-B081JofebsB-jaIIjW0N7KBgCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4954.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IeUK_MO232k/XVwI4_aHc2I/AAAAAAAAacE/8CqvvG6z-B081JofebsB-jaIIjW0N7KBgCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4954.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Here are those all finished.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OFyuCTVk1Ps/XVwI44fE9rI/AAAAAAAAacE/ACkRfyQTPskuZYY_BnQ97OBC9SKWBU0eQCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4957.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OFyuCTVk1Ps/XVwI44fE9rI/AAAAAAAAacE/ACkRfyQTPskuZYY_BnQ97OBC9SKWBU0eQCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4957.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Next I countersunk the tank attach nutplate mounting holes. They are done on the opposite side! Be careful as it would be easy to countersink the wrong side! Notice the outboard most hole is too close to the spar bar to get the cage in there....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4kR-DPcp63Y/XVwI41ESRyI/AAAAAAAAacE/zeESI4-GDA4yzrreIc0EQc1oXVZBUC89ACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4958.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4kR-DPcp63Y/XVwI41ESRyI/AAAAAAAAacE/zeESI4-GDA4yzrreIc0EQc1oXVZBUC89ACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4958.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
For these, I just put the bit in the electric screwdriver and use the suicide method of countersinking the hole. Just go slow and spot check it very often to make sure you don't go to deep!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-73TmAnH48a8/XVwI403DNiI/AAAAAAAAacE/WQionkaWcak-i6jCnrVbs-z12t14dxp1wCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4960.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-73TmAnH48a8/XVwI403DNiI/AAAAAAAAacE/WQionkaWcak-i6jCnrVbs-z12t14dxp1wCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4960.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once done, you can't tell they were done without a cage.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7aca8rfEJXY/XVwI4yRjbgI/AAAAAAAAacE/bDfqdJnhWLYPq8cLFCh-b-XBMg49FuokwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4959.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7aca8rfEJXY/XVwI4yRjbgI/AAAAAAAAacE/bDfqdJnhWLYPq8cLFCh-b-XBMg49FuokwCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4959.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Nice and easy!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bJHDMui5qrE/XVwI4-sw3XI/AAAAAAAAacE/R6fLdRMcYPUS7Pp9Aax-yM-BnY7TY2Q4gCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4961.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bJHDMui5qrE/XVwI4-sw3XI/AAAAAAAAacE/R6fLdRMcYPUS7Pp9Aax-yM-BnY7TY2Q4gCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4961.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Next I squeezed the three #4 rivets that are between the wing attach bolt nutplates.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IqHE_jIw20A/XVwI4-REhhI/AAAAAAAAacE/qi-ebwTRNf837sVvFW2Ca4j2hOgRyHevQCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4962.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IqHE_jIw20A/XVwI4-REhhI/AAAAAAAAacE/qi-ebwTRNf837sVvFW2Ca4j2hOgRyHevQCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4962.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
And then the wing attach bolt nutplate mounting rivets.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2RriMcXqoYg/XVwI4zSOcvI/AAAAAAAAacE/YYfXO9L5nu4h5raIrsilA7EnoRxO6N6cQCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4964.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2RriMcXqoYg/XVwI4zSOcvI/AAAAAAAAacE/YYfXO9L5nu4h5raIrsilA7EnoRxO6N6cQCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4964.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JjkpSyMAS_E/XVwI499izDI/AAAAAAAAacE/2lbVSVwf-g8_2UWPXWpM2SZdGOtPoOD1gCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4965.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JjkpSyMAS_E/XVwI499izDI/AAAAAAAAacE/2lbVSVwf-g8_2UWPXWpM2SZdGOtPoOD1gCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4965.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-E5SS2DOkdYU/XVwI44kvgkI/AAAAAAAAacE/Ly4YmmFe4VMMs_tkzQ4o4C0yYGXDGaragCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4966.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-E5SS2DOkdYU/XVwI44kvgkI/AAAAAAAAacE/Ly4YmmFe4VMMs_tkzQ4o4C0yYGXDGaragCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4966.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
And finally I had to use the rivet gun and bucking bar to rivet these tank attach bolt nutplate mounting rivets. The ones close to the spar bars are a little tricky. Don't damage those bars!<br />
<br />

Today I got started with all the wing spar countersinking.....after the screw holes are countersunk, that will have been about 554 holes countersunk give or take a few.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So Vans has you countersink all the nutplate mounting holes flush. They also have you countersink the holes that just intersect the ribs and spare flanges flush since they don't go thru the skin.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next they have you countersink the rest of the 3/32 holes -0.007" from flush that have rivets that come thru the skin. There are a bunch of them!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IJyPiGodZuk/XVAVkpdiy1I/AAAAAAAAaTQ/RB8lbodHx0o5uzplNXM__fUD0qOilnd0wCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4880.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IJyPiGodZuk/XVAVkpdiy1I/AAAAAAAAaTQ/RB8lbodHx0o5uzplNXM__fUD0qOilnd0wCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4880.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>

So for some weird reason Van's has you use the wing spar to match drill the holes for the wing skin J stiffeners. I imagine they have you do this because it is hard to do it the old fashioned way by aligning a center line in the wing skin holes. I guess it is too far to expect someone to be able to reach or something. Anyway some people have made a mistake here and mis-drill these. Thankfully I read about that elsewhere before and this was not a problem for me. Thanks to all the people that came before me!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They have you clamp the stiffeners to the wing spar flange.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QyxcSbDm45E/XUod8Jnj4cI/AAAAAAAAaOY/9rFJD45Wa2opuRb85GG17mdWBtHVdG03gCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4858.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QyxcSbDm45E/XUod8Jnj4cI/AAAAAAAAaOY/9rFJD45Wa2opuRb85GG17mdWBtHVdG03gCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4858.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
The stiffener should stick up above the spar flange by 1/16".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9yrHjWAVXc4/XUod8GYYYeI/AAAAAAAAaOY/nw_VCd-WVvgp-BNJ23sdMu7LZXo-sJCvACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4859.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9yrHjWAVXc4/XUod8GYYYeI/AAAAAAAAaOY/nw_VCd-WVvgp-BNJ23sdMu7LZXo-sJCvACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4859.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Then match drill it to the spar flange holes. I used a cleco in every other hole.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l4AkvH4gkCA/XUod8G8GTDI/AAAAAAAAaOY/kfetljnkCZIpz9-CRC5tZL6Arw4zLxy0ACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4860.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l4AkvH4gkCA/XUod8G8GTDI/AAAAAAAAaOY/kfetljnkCZIpz9-CRC5tZL6Arw4zLxy0ACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4860.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Yep, that is a bunch of holes!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qSdNfTHqdxE/XUod8ID51KI/AAAAAAAAaOY/_lVChUF9n38_KpsWjvwi1Kh8zrQPIBXQgCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4861.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qSdNfTHqdxE/XUod8ID51KI/AAAAAAAAaOY/_lVChUF9n38_KpsWjvwi1Kh8zrQPIBXQgCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4861.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
For the bottom side, they have you skip the area that gets inspection plate nutplates. Those don't exist on the wing skin where the J stiffeners go so you don't want those holes match drilled here in the wrong place.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xEDOP7srRnc/XUod8MYPHFI/AAAAAAAAaOY/bJoH2x-bDIkOHNmHCCJiS9qT9AAUB4SMACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4862.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xEDOP7srRnc/XUod8MYPHFI/AAAAAAAAaOY/bJoH2x-bDIkOHNmHCCJiS9qT9AAUB4SMACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4862.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Both sides done. Something like 164 holes per spar!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_n0TvHOtdLQ/XUod8M_sKUI/AAAAAAAAaOY/Ea08p6eDKYM0JmG4xHHAVoDgW4gahaL0QCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4863.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_n0TvHOtdLQ/XUod8M_sKUI/AAAAAAAAaOY/Ea08p6eDKYM0JmG4xHHAVoDgW4gahaL0QCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4863.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>

</div>
So my wife and I started today by completing the inventory on all the hardware and parts for the wing kit. We just counted the parts and the bags of hardware. I do not count each nut and bolt in each bag. I just look at them and if they look about right then that is good enough. A missing nut or screw here and there is not a deal breaker and not going to make or break this project. I would rather spend my hours building vs counting every screw or nutplate.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LM_BfJI44iI/XUhGwa3eFnI/AAAAAAAAaM4/xONt_DABHRU_WLJ91-7qTrjBflRcDzpyACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4836.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LM_BfJI44iI/XUhGwa3eFnI/AAAAAAAAaM4/xONt_DABHRU_WLJ91-7qTrjBflRcDzpyACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4836.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>

<br />
All the parts and bags were accounted for. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5pq1F-dryRc/XUhGwWXwf0I/AAAAAAAAaM4/x1ChRze8IYEnAknkSyJlT5kza-et7R7UACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4844.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5pq1F-dryRc/XUhGwWXwf0I/AAAAAAAAaM4/x1ChRze8IYEnAknkSyJlT5kza-et7R7UACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4844.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Next I got started with the spars. These things are over 12' long and heavy! Love the beautiful gold anodizing! Amazing workmanship on these things!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mFKCD-YF6OU/XUhGwSE2B6I/AAAAAAAAaM4/fD-MfRR3ps8XhrYF7SLiB2A277IccB1uwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4845.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mFKCD-YF6OU/XUhGwSE2B6I/AAAAAAAAaM4/fD-MfRR3ps8XhrYF7SLiB2A277IccB1uwCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4845.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WSXmFYtV9Uk/XUhGwUIQNbI/AAAAAAAAaM4/ENiWVf-FhUke2_eo923RN42PAL6lewE6wCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4846.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WSXmFYtV9Uk/XUhGwUIQNbI/AAAAAAAAaM4/ENiWVf-FhUke2_eo923RN42PAL6lewE6wCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4846.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Important to know which side is fore and aft and which is top and bottom! Don't want to make a mistake so I marked them on all four sides for easy ID!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8vXF7JfEBmI/XUhGwRGSRyI/AAAAAAAAaM4/A_XCne-sDAwkspadjuMDqUBumTgdbSWtQCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4847.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8vXF7JfEBmI/XUhGwRGSRyI/AAAAAAAAaM4/A_XCne-sDAwkspadjuMDqUBumTgdbSWtQCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4847.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Next I deburred and finished the edges on the wing spar extensions.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-u0O_FzonXSU/XUhGwfPaJsI/AAAAAAAAaM4/iyMSV1IiMKsKqkFzQrjXzpqWBmiguGIBgCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4848.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-u0O_FzonXSU/XUhGwfPaJsI/AAAAAAAAaM4/iyMSV1IiMKsKqkFzQrjXzpqWBmiguGIBgCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4848.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Did the same on the wing spar extension doubler plates.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8XMATFU4CFk/XUhGwWTlvmI/AAAAAAAAaM4/rOHZFgCdjdMHELaOTI0R1YlYZuFX9E4sACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4849.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8XMATFU4CFk/XUhGwWTlvmI/AAAAAAAAaM4/rOHZFgCdjdMHELaOTI0R1YlYZuFX9E4sACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4849.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
I then cleco'ed the extensions to the spars using the doubler plates. I marked all 8 of them and their location.<br />
.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-53XwzCPJco0/XUhGwSsCjwI/AAAAAAAAaM4/OUO4xYcVpTk02dHn3maTs7evRwZhlIqOQCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4850.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-53XwzCPJco0/XUhGwSsCjwI/AAAAAAAAaM4/OUO4xYcVpTk02dHn3maTs7evRwZhlIqOQCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4850.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Then match drilled them all together. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UuROVW1kPhs/XUhGwVwTV-I/AAAAAAAAaM4/iLjaQYoPHAUk96E9bVE-8_GH1OKvwiJTwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4851.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UuROVW1kPhs/XUhGwVwTV-I/AAAAAAAAaM4/iLjaQYoPHAUk96E9bVE-8_GH1OKvwiJTwCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4851.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Then I marked the 4ea J stiffener's @ 92.25"<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cQznxzc_Pds/XUhGwbHPSGI/AAAAAAAAaM4/6aGkLxlzv2o4Smle4KTbj-indM4aRSgcwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4853.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cQznxzc_Pds/XUhGwbHPSGI/AAAAAAAAaM4/6aGkLxlzv2o4Smle4KTbj-indM4aRSgcwCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4853.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
And cut them on the bandsaw.<br />

<br />
Everything made the trip with no damage or lost parts :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XEwaeH-gvSk/XUGnlyBRYfI/AAAAAAAAaJY/EC7Vp3rjVzMjssOf4Uj_Eb9VH4mcISDUgCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4824.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XEwaeH-gvSk/XUGnlyBRYfI/AAAAAAAAaJY/EC7Vp3rjVzMjssOf4Uj_Eb9VH4mcISDUgCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4824.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2YfEsQBeOXE/XUGnl_cg-MI/AAAAAAAAaJY/KEX5UdOWrwYE9TCHKqQvCjTRhcdR0XfTACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4825.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2YfEsQBeOXE/XUGnl_cg-MI/AAAAAAAAaJY/KEX5UdOWrwYE9TCHKqQvCjTRhcdR0XfTACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4825.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
When I get time, I need to hang the parts up out of the way and get a table to leave the tail cone on to help prevent damage. The cheap harbor freight blankets will do for now.<br />

Vans missed their lead time and projection a little bit and it took a few extra days for ABF to decide to deliver my kit so this added up to about 3 extra weeks I was not expecting for lead time.<br />
<br />
ABF canceled delivery three days in a row and ended up delivering my kit at about 7PM on a day where they claimed the delivery would take place between 9-5. <br />
<br />
When the truck finally arrived, I found that the spar box was in great shape but the other crate was busted open, missing part of the lid, bottom panel pulled loose, two metal bands missing, and the skids on the bottom broken off.<br />

Thanks ABF! You are now officially 0 for 3 kits (RV7 kits included) that you managed to deliver to be without severely damaging the crate!<br />

At first I figured there was no way that the contents would be intact and or not damaged. Much to my surprise it appears that everything is still in there! I have to do a complete inventory to be sure but it is looking good so far.<br />

After pulling everything out and getting a look at it, all the parts seem to be undamaged. The skins are OK and while I still need to do a complete inventory to make sure nothing fell out, it looks like I got lucky!<br />

<br />
Van's lead times seem to be higher than what I am used to and they missed their estimate a bit. Also the freight company is taking their sweet time getting the kit to me.<br />
<br />
Hopefully I will get my wing kit tomorrow.Brian Chesteenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14394206506196128604noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11941516325512241.post-28312594743525935102019-06-25T20:33:00.000-04:002019-07-09T10:12:04.015-04:00Still awaiting wings.....Wing kit was suppose to be crated last week and I had hoped to be shipped by week end. Still has not shipped as of today. Best advice is order early as you can. The lead times seem to be long right now!Brian Chesteenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14394206506196128604noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11941516325512241.post-4381882546762712482019-05-30T17:21:00.001-04:002019-07-09T10:11:41.266-04:00Waiting on wingsI did not die.....<br />
<br />
Just waiting on the wing kit to arrive.<br />
<br />
I made the final payment today and crating is scheduled for the 6/17/19.<br />
<br />
I have a couple more things I can do to the tail kit but I am dragging my feet. Vacation next week so no progress will happen till after.<br />
<br />
Later gator!<br />
<br />
<br />
Oh,<br />
<br />
I did forget to post these pics of me drilling the elevator horns:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-z3iRoss3af4/XPBJ4V_JPqI/AAAAAAAAZsg/UUYZYYD-iZoosonOGziQ_E0Ww8akL25TwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4612.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-z3iRoss3af4/XPBJ4V_JPqI/AAAAAAAAZsg/UUYZYYD-iZoosonOGziQ_E0Ww8akL25TwCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4612.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Temp installed the left elevator. Sanded down the drill bushing and put it in the center bearing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qDZIKP82h8k/XPBJ4ZTV5pI/AAAAAAAAZsg/h9G3nmlXM3svgrN0KVMU65k8Gh9Zw1HVACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4613.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qDZIKP82h8k/XPBJ4ZTV5pI/AAAAAAAAZsg/h9G3nmlXM3svgrN0KVMU65k8Gh9Zw1HVACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4613.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Used it to drill the left elevator horn.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2YxmSr6niw0/XPBJ4ecfpqI/AAAAAAAAZsg/AcAXehrSY8YKHSMbNuzUnTmyCWnLlgZXACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4614.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2YxmSr6niw0/XPBJ4ecfpqI/AAAAAAAAZsg/AcAXehrSY8YKHSMbNuzUnTmyCWnLlgZXACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4614.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_bxZdR5XpOM/XPBJ4TpNMdI/AAAAAAAAZsg/DsiUlZpXymsPjSBgR8sVUxgboXi3eCIMACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4615.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_bxZdR5XpOM/XPBJ4TpNMdI/AAAAAAAAZsg/DsiUlZpXymsPjSBgR8sVUxgboXi3eCIMACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4615.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Switched sides and drilled the right elevator horn.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zIVEe5jpQr8/XPBJ4UlttfI/AAAAAAAAZsg/jfT62dB9W9giqiF4FuhZN6WuS3LoY2l7QCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4616.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zIVEe5jpQr8/XPBJ4UlttfI/AAAAAAAAZsg/jfT62dB9W9giqiF4FuhZN6WuS3LoY2l7QCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4616.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Then I upsized the hole to almost 1/4" and then final reamed the hole to exactly 1/4" on both sides.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pBrxENEPZlI/XPBJ4bJaYII/AAAAAAAAZsg/meeryTAAkaYaRhA3gYLJwfAtDFac0Ik0wCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4617.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pBrxENEPZlI/XPBJ4bJaYII/AAAAAAAAZsg/meeryTAAkaYaRhA3gYLJwfAtDFac0Ik0wCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4617.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Deburred the holes.<br />
<br />

I did not follow the directions and mount the elevators to the HS on the bench like they tell you to. The only reason I can see they have you do that is to help stabilize the whole mess. My HS is already mounted to the tailcone and I used straps to help keep it stable. So now I am going to mount the elevators.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LuSWfV_VaDI/XNqzKJfeORI/AAAAAAAAZn0/ftqrPIjHxH053g51Ihu0hhzdPQDmlMx9gCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4605.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LuSWfV_VaDI/XNqzKJfeORI/AAAAAAAAZn0/ftqrPIjHxH053g51Ihu0hhzdPQDmlMx9gCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4605.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
First I need to install the rod end bearings into the elevator spars. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ov843-x95TQ/XNqzKJmbQjI/AAAAAAAAZn0/yOM_R2zZJcwizT1yfDf-8agpz6DFx_7HwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4606.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ov843-x95TQ/XNqzKJmbQjI/AAAAAAAAZn0/yOM_R2zZJcwizT1yfDf-8agpz6DFx_7HwCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4606.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
I made this tool back when I built the RV-7. It works like a dream at installing rod end bearings into nutplates.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vAbY1DJEFc8/XNqzKHDJpzI/AAAAAAAAZn0/lCPaf1KCl_Qnmu2HTM1riJtHF3lrC0P1gCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4607.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vAbY1DJEFc8/XNqzKHDJpzI/AAAAAAAAZn0/lCPaf1KCl_Qnmu2HTM1riJtHF3lrC0P1gCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4607.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Detail of how it is made on the business end.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VHeIxUzMkKI/XNqzKGrTuzI/AAAAAAAAZn0/w_V5KfNG1H0gxZiOE9Jv58O-lgCYTW0gACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4608.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VHeIxUzMkKI/XNqzKGrTuzI/AAAAAAAAZn0/w_V5KfNG1H0gxZiOE9Jv58O-lgCYTW0gACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4608.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
The bearing goes in like this. The way it is made, it puts the pressure on the outside of the bearing and not the ball which can damage these things.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vHKZG0mxAKc/XNqzKJhAlkI/AAAAAAAAZn0/-dvMTX6kruY5vWfvtHm0rPP3143A66n2gCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4609.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vHKZG0mxAKc/XNqzKJhAlkI/AAAAAAAAZn0/-dvMTX6kruY5vWfvtHm0rPP3143A66n2gCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4609.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Get the bearing started in the hole and twist to the desired depth. Easy peasy!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-up80Tv8VoNo/XNqzKNSh-VI/AAAAAAAAZn0/K6n4mRUVj3Y8shLKXXGDSUmAbdRsSBqQACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4610.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-up80Tv8VoNo/XNqzKNSh-VI/AAAAAAAAZn0/K6n4mRUVj3Y8shLKXXGDSUmAbdRsSBqQACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4610.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
I installed these exactly per the plans which is 7/8" from the center of the ball hole to the face of the elevator front spar. To make it easier, add 3/8" to that dimension and measure 1-1/4" from the top of the outside edge of the bearing assembly to the front spar face. I used the depth gauge feature of my digital calipers to do this. <br />
<br />
Amazingly this worked like a treat! The elevator counterweight ended up perfectly aligned with the HS! No goofing around with the bearings required!Brian Chesteenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14394206506196128604noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11941516325512241.post-50100375779621280492019-05-07T21:30:00.000-04:002019-05-09T19:40:20.381-04:00Mounting the empennage to the tail cone #2<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ULdaohpBX_Q/XNS32Dw2wjI/AAAAAAAAZlc/RxiSXUg8Hz8SEiFikHJES4zczUqfY43sgCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4580.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ULdaohpBX_Q/XNS32Dw2wjI/AAAAAAAAZlc/RxiSXUg8Hz8SEiFikHJES4zczUqfY43sgCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4580.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Got started tonight by drilling the rear HS spar to the vertical spar mounting brackets. Starting with #30 drill to get a pilot hole.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tnAojFgg6O4/XNS32LuhYhI/AAAAAAAAZlc/AxPz0E8VDy4Dy8HdRtW2TcQsgGX1cOtXwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4581.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tnAojFgg6O4/XNS32LuhYhI/AAAAAAAAZlc/AxPz0E8VDy4Dy8HdRtW2TcQsgGX1cOtXwCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4581.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Then moving up to a long #12 drill for final hole size.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NpMeJaZFPv0/XNS32JAJsgI/AAAAAAAAZlc/DaIKuTSPSZ0mLP12zcnlPWAnXtiMvbEEgCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4583.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NpMeJaZFPv0/XNS32JAJsgI/AAAAAAAAZlc/DaIKuTSPSZ0mLP12zcnlPWAnXtiMvbEEgCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4583.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Then I deburred the holes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zY1s4jnrhD0/XNS32F8pM0I/AAAAAAAAZlc/_OOhzJ16xaUmkjZeyGOhuAvoAT8G80c5ACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4584.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zY1s4jnrhD0/XNS32F8pM0I/AAAAAAAAZlc/_OOhzJ16xaUmkjZeyGOhuAvoAT8G80c5ACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4584.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
And installed the hardware called out in the plans.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6EM3IJ6HhTY/XNS32AX3MMI/AAAAAAAAZlc/sQvbcMQIl0AwnK0k0YlvFjAEGSzfEe0ZgCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4585.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6EM3IJ6HhTY/XNS32AX3MMI/AAAAAAAAZlc/sQvbcMQIl0AwnK0k0YlvFjAEGSzfEe0ZgCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4585.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Then per the plans I made this wood block to go between the front spar mounting tabs. I then clamped it to the aft deck per the plans.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JtmIpKim3K0/XNS32F8F-PI/AAAAAAAAZlc/Qr0XNkqvPmEq9xr7OIV0X6Y_VbuaF7TwQCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4586.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JtmIpKim3K0/XNS32F8F-PI/AAAAAAAAZlc/Qr0XNkqvPmEq9xr7OIV0X6Y_VbuaF7TwQCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4586.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Checked about a dozen times for square. It was really close out of the box. I only had to move it 1/32 of an inch.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-u64yiJNoZt8/XNS32MMbsOI/AAAAAAAAZlc/dRI_hV_rEhEXIxI-Jz0xqzQFPZ_3muz3wCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4587.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-u64yiJNoZt8/XNS32MMbsOI/AAAAAAAAZlc/dRI_hV_rEhEXIxI-Jz0xqzQFPZ_3muz3wCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4587.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Once happy I used the front spar mounting tabs to drill the aft deck and the doubler underneath it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CHPbdna4Gd8/XNS32CzxM-I/AAAAAAAAZlc/e0C2qRaSVsQrT5i39mMQ5efLo6_bM6AXQCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4588.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CHPbdna4Gd8/XNS32CzxM-I/AAAAAAAAZlc/e0C2qRaSVsQrT5i39mMQ5efLo6_bM6AXQCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4588.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Then I installed the hardware called out in the plans. No problem with edge distance here!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CEq9rXFRu1c/XNS32LESkQI/AAAAAAAAZlc/uc43ZaovPh4qXjYoRvBCK3Id8kYYGXr4wCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4589.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CEq9rXFRu1c/XNS32LESkQI/AAAAAAAAZlc/uc43ZaovPh4qXjYoRvBCK3Id8kYYGXr4wCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4589.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Other side....no edge distance issues here either.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jQbz6iSJa9U/XNS32MokFfI/AAAAAAAAZlc/YpEb8DF3ErUwGnTWNBYlZ5_F3tb44rt4gCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4590.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jQbz6iSJa9U/XNS32MokFfI/AAAAAAAAZlc/YpEb8DF3ErUwGnTWNBYlZ5_F3tb44rt4gCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4590.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Then I bolted on the VS front spar mounting plate. Amazing that this is all there is holding the VS front spar on the plane.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YIEC5nldiuM/XNS32P8IQQI/AAAAAAAAZlc/jKF1_2zan3ULsIyta5F4gJ1gXhHToFn6ACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4592.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YIEC5nldiuM/XNS32P8IQQI/AAAAAAAAZlc/jKF1_2zan3ULsIyta5F4gJ1gXhHToFn6ACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4592.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
I then match reamed the top rear spar holes to the tailcone and installed the called out hardware.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cXqb3LUWkQY/XNS32LuLKXI/AAAAAAAAZlc/tXCx9wENpo0F3qNz2_hDJ31fPOoZQa00ACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4593.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cXqb3LUWkQY/XNS32LuLKXI/AAAAAAAAZlc/tXCx9wENpo0F3qNz2_hDJ31fPOoZQa00ACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4593.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Next I match reamed the lower holes and installed the called out hardware in the upper two.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ATnecVkJy1k/XNS32GySrII/AAAAAAAAZlc/WNcqL-w91h4pvs1_snE-wNdDyWbzzgjfACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4594.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ATnecVkJy1k/XNS32GySrII/AAAAAAAAZlc/WNcqL-w91h4pvs1_snE-wNdDyWbzzgjfACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4594.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Next I had to machine countersink the bottom holes to receive a flush head structural screw.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D-y4cuidGdM/XNS32L-stsI/AAAAAAAAZlc/TZpQCfSVo4EWxF0MlbKKo1xb4mUMB5HngCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4596.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D-y4cuidGdM/XNS32L-stsI/AAAAAAAAZlc/TZpQCfSVo4EWxF0MlbKKo1xb4mUMB5HngCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4596.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Here are the lower hardware in place.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MTMRVtLXzQ8/XNS32POeo-I/AAAAAAAAZlc/97fvybv5IhcUgzU7U9F5zefKx7shRkEywCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4597.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MTMRVtLXzQ8/XNS32POeo-I/AAAAAAAAZlc/97fvybv5IhcUgzU7U9F5zefKx7shRkEywCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4597.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Next I used the rudder hinge bracket as a guide to drill a #30 pilot hole in the whole assembly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MuHtH5uwZ0Q/XNS32NScI_I/AAAAAAAAZlc/kkq5r4-WCIU8-4aWd0hA7f4fI8FRC2VhACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4598.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MuHtH5uwZ0Q/XNS32NScI_I/AAAAAAAAZlc/kkq5r4-WCIU8-4aWd0hA7f4fI8FRC2VhACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4598.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Then I punched it up to #12 for the hardware.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nWbLIPxu94I/XNS32CYS-_I/AAAAAAAAZlc/mlPzpu6B5TsAtEm5JJmntQZKhOoFhufAACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4599.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nWbLIPxu94I/XNS32CYS-_I/AAAAAAAAZlc/mlPzpu6B5TsAtEm5JJmntQZKhOoFhufAACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4599.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Deburred both sides of the hole. And installed the called out hardware.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pWz9yqG5kSg/XNS32PEdT_I/AAAAAAAAZlc/D1K-tgEgOPExHSx1cj8JXpvtTQyrHm9mACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4600.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pWz9yqG5kSg/XNS32PEdT_I/AAAAAAAAZlc/D1K-tgEgOPExHSx1cj8JXpvtTQyrHm9mACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4600.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Next I installed the VS front spar bolt. It is subject to rotation so they have you use a castle nut and a bolt with a cotter pin hole. I won't do that now since it all has to come apart anyway.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0l8CCyKDnmI/XNS32O-CD3I/AAAAAAAAZlc/NBkFVccVWZkjTVj9P8ECDlzdkRL2wWdSgCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4601.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0l8CCyKDnmI/XNS32O-CD3I/AAAAAAAAZlc/NBkFVccVWZkjTVj9P8ECDlzdkRL2wWdSgCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4601.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Inside shot of the rudder stop/hinge bracket hardware. Not enough threads for me showing so I will either go with a thin washer or a longer bolt at final assembly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Y-2kx3JB5rI/XNGLChW9LtI/AAAAAAAAZiM/ImEOJ1aqXCMgYaATCCyeAePoqEhuWuM8gCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4565.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Y-2kx3JB5rI/XNGLChW9LtI/AAAAAAAAZiM/ImEOJ1aqXCMgYaATCCyeAePoqEhuWuM8gCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4565.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Got started today with deburring the VS to HS front spar mount. I still can't believe that this is all there is that holds the VS's front spar to the plane..... I also fabricated the HS stab front spar mount spacers per the plans. I used the band saw to cut em out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TwN8G8CQgXo/XNGLCszQzWI/AAAAAAAAZiM/Qw1wkbll8coqSL033Joiw_EEA6yIgMukwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4566.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TwN8G8CQgXo/XNGLCszQzWI/AAAAAAAAZiM/Qw1wkbll8coqSL033Joiw_EEA6yIgMukwCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4566.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Next I match reamed the VS front spar mount plate to the HS front spar with a #12 reamer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c97Nos5_YOM/XNGLCialE0I/AAAAAAAAZiM/fv6bNvniU0QdEJt8PhOEe8vUmydyRCr2QCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4567.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c97Nos5_YOM/XNGLCialE0I/AAAAAAAAZiM/fv6bNvniU0QdEJt8PhOEe8vUmydyRCr2QCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4567.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Next I reamed the top bolt hole to 1/4" full size.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-01OCLVXTELA/XNGLCqUYEfI/AAAAAAAAZiM/kooNy_teSx8-2emIb97cGcwvs7de18bEgCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4568.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-01OCLVXTELA/XNGLCqUYEfI/AAAAAAAAZiM/kooNy_teSx8-2emIb97cGcwvs7de18bEgCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4568.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Then I deburred all the holes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sRfVg5Yb0Yc/XNGLCj11B-I/AAAAAAAAZiM/tGpF2bKdEFseniBCZxzL6IuUWWceWAINgCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4569.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sRfVg5Yb0Yc/XNGLCj11B-I/AAAAAAAAZiM/tGpF2bKdEFseniBCZxzL6IuUWWceWAINgCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4569.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
HS front spar hole deburring.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s5rLz33uzVw/XNGLCnj5zcI/AAAAAAAAZiM/qFTscWj5dpMhWcXItJEkOhwgDT9BeWozwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4570.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s5rLz33uzVw/XNGLCnj5zcI/AAAAAAAAZiM/qFTscWj5dpMhWcXItJEkOhwgDT9BeWozwCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4570.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The back side...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-btmg2U-PHA4/XNGLCuXYD3I/AAAAAAAAZiM/U1bsyLIe5JcRNPQfKxLjCF-cqGMrXZuvACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_4571.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-btmg2U-PHA4/XNGLCuXYD3I/AAAAAAAAZiM/U1bsyLIe5JcRNPQfKxLjCF-cqGMrXZuvACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_4571.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Then I went ahead and started prepping for drilling the HS mount holes onto the tailcone. I placed the HS on the tailcone with the spacers I fabricated. I used some straps to ensure the whole thing remains level and can't fall over.<br />
